February 14, 2012: The Mobile Life, Highlights from the 2012 Consumer Electronics Show

This year's Consumer Electronics Show (CES) kicked off the new year with a bang, with over 150,000 attendees packed into Las Vegas to check out over 3100 exhibitors in an area larger than 35 (American) football fields.

The big themes this year were "thin" and "smart". Thin as in OLED TVs that looked like a sheet of glass, and Intel's big push for Ultrabook laptops (think MacBook Air). And Smart was everywhere, with even more connected Smart TVs and Blu-ray players that provide deeper interaction though voice and gesture control. But the other half of CES was focused on smaller devices for our mobile lives, with smartphones and tablets and lots of fun iPhone and iPad accessories.

So come explore the new developments from CES, as Doug Dixon returns for his annual round-up and demos of the next generation in our mobile lives.

October 11, 2011: Geotagging Digital Photos on the Mac

These advances usually involve the camera's imaging system or processing the resulting photos—such as capturing more image data for greater editing freedom (with RAW format files) and gathering a wider range of brightness to make a photo look more realistic or surreal with high dynamic range (HDR.)

This month's meeting will showcase another advance, but the camera's imaging system is not directly involved: the combining of photos with coordinates from the Global Positioning System (GPS) in what is called "geotagging." This can be both helpful and fun. By geotagging your images you can locate your position so you may return again, compare photos from different locations to find the best spot, and get help identifying unknown features around you.

PMUG's Michael Blank will show what geotagging is all about. Learn about the hardware and Mac software needed for geotagging photos with any digital camera, the geotagging process, and how to resolve GPS receiver and geotagging problems you may encounter. Michael will also demonstrate how geotagged photos from the online online community can help you take better pictures.

Don't miss this informative and eye-opening presentation!

About the presenter...
Michael Blank is PMUG's Webmaster and produces two Podcasts for the group: the Monthly Meetings Podcast and the DIALOGcast.

September 13, 2011: Photography and the Mac: an overview

Steve Stanger will present photo editing/processing, management, and sharing on the Mac.

Although each of those could be broken down into presentations of their own, Steve's goal is to give an idea of the different workflows and software options that are available, no matter what kind of camera or Mac one uses.

About the presenter...
Steven Stanger is an Apple Certified IT Professional with over a decade of support experience in various environments: the entertainment and advertising industry, desktop publishing, education, photography & video editing, Web and multimedia design, small busines, and home Mac use. Steven has been working with the Macintosh since it was released in the mid 80's.

Steve's interest in photography started when his Mother gave him his first Kodak Instamatic camera at age eight. This then led to his disappearance from many photos considering he was the one behind the camera (most of the time). Steve pursued photography through his teen and college years. At some point photography "got away from him" to be rediscovered a few years ago with the advent of better, more affordable digital cameras. Many of Steve's photographs are shot in New Jersey. He believes that, "to take great photographs you don't necessarily have to travel too far from home.
