PMUG's Holiday Party - December 12, 1995: Microsoft et. al. You love'em, you hate'em, now you get to party with 'em. That's right, software monolith Microsoft will be on hand for our December meeting. Specifically Amelle Stein will show off possible holiday gift selections from Microsoft's consumer products division, including Encarta. Amelle also hopes to bring some fun items for our raffle. After the business meeting at 7:15 PM, the membership will disperse to explore the various offerings and socialize: * Holiday food and drinks will be available in a side room. * Our software library will be open before and during the meeting for disk-copying. As always, bring formatted disks with you. Copies of First Class Client and the Library Catalogue will be available. * Two of our members, Ray Laue and Terry Wilson, will demonstrate and explain Netscape, PMUG's BBS (sign-up available, bring your own formatted high-density floppy), and America On-Line with a live hook-up. * Andy Baird will continue the How & Why SIG. * Around 9:30, there may be a small raffle to end the festivities. Artist Robert Burger with Adobe Illustrator at the November 14, 1995 PMUG Meeting For our November meeting, award-winning computer artist Robert Burger will demonstrate the popular computer program Adobe Illustrator. Burger has become an expert Adobe Illustrator user and his advanced methods of using the software program will be featured in the November Issue of "Step-by-Step Electronic Design" magazine. Burger became well known for illustrating the logo for the film "Conan the Barbarian", and for his artwork on the covers of the Chief Inspector Morse mystery book series. Among Burger's clients are Byte, Datamation, Amiga World, and Publisher's Weekly Magazines. Fractal Design at the October 10, 1995 PMUG Meeting Anyone who ever sat at one of the first Macs remembers the feeling that it wasn't too late to be an artist after trying out MacPaint. Since that time, no company has done as much to keep that feeling alive as Fractal. Fractal has numerous paint type programs for beginners to skilled traditional artists. This month's PMUG meeting will feature Mike Poppolo from Fractal Design. Mike will show several Fractal products, including Posertheir latest offering in the computer graphics field. Poser is a program for creating the human figure in 3-D. It allows you to easily make adjustments to all elements, from lighting to the pose of the figure. Mike may also touch on both Dabbler, a paint program for people without traditional art training, and their next release of Paintertheir flagship program. The Link Between Multimedia and The Internet at the September 12, 1995 PMUG Meeting The two biggest buzzwords you're likely to encounter when reading an article written about cyberspace are "multimedia" and "the Internet". This month's PMUG will tie those two ideas together. John Baker from MacroMedia will be on hand to show us the leading multimedia development tool, Director. Director is a program that allows you to combine graphics, animation, video, text, sound, and programming (although you don't need to be a programming wiz) into interactive presentations. Many popular CD games are created using Director. The latest news, however, is the alliance of MacroMedia with Netscape. John will also show us how the Director engine will be used with Netscape Navigator to run interactive presentations on Web sites. Local Internet Providers at the August 8, 1995 PMUG Meeting This month's PMUG will feature one or two representatives from area Internet providers to tell us all about getting hooked into the Internet. The Internet offers a wide range of options, and the connection procedure can be confusing, so bring all your questions to the August meeting. A Mac Joystick Adapter and The PMUG Web Pages at the July 11, 1995 PMUG Meeting Brian Flaherty from Kernel Productions will be here to show us their latest product--The Choicestick. The Choicestick is a joystick adapter that allows Mac users to plug their Sega and Ninetendo joysticks into the Mac. Complete with q software interface, The Choicestick is designed to let users play games the same way as they would on those home units. PMUG Member Mike Blank will be on hand to show us all the new PMUG Web pages. Later, Mike will teach us how to create a web page, complete with graphics and hyperlinks, and discuss the HTML language. Netscape Navigator at the June 13, 1995 PMUG Meeting PMUG member Allan Migdal will give us a demonstration of Netscape Communications Corporation's Netscape Navigator, the popular World Wide Web browser for both Macs and PCs. If you are interested in exploring the Internet, this is a meeting you should attend. Microsoft Word 6 and OmniPage Professional at the May 9, 1995 PMUG Meeting Maria Langer will show Microsoft Word 6. Maria is a familiar guest speaker at our meetings, and has recently completed The Macintosh Bible Guide to Word 6 for Peachpit Press, which has just been placed into our library. Also on the program, a representative from Caere will show OmniPage Professional, the popular OCR software. Broderbund Software at the April 11, 1995 PMUG Meeting Steve McClatchy, the Mid-Atlantic Rep for Broderbund Software, will be our featured speaker in April. Broderbund Software skyrocketed on the charts as the publisher of Print Shop Deluxe, the first user-friendly graphics & text layout program for that OTHER computer platform. In 1988 it was the cat's meow (sound byte) when all one had was a 286. Not content to rest on their laurels, however, Broderbund has continued to claim their share of fame in the Edutainment arena, with the Living Books series, the first of which was My Grandma and Me, produced in partnership with Random House. For the actively creative child there are the KID PIX & KP COLLECTION applications, and for the adventurous you will find the Where in The ??? is Carmen San Diego? Growing up (!?) from these one finds Prince of Persia and MYST, the latter briefly highlighted in December. Another very CD-ROM title is an edutaining module having to do with SPACE & SOLAR SYSTEM with wondrous graphics and special effects. Also, new offerings include some home-based CAD-like programs for planning interior construction/remodeling and for landscape design. The former will display the room plan from any angle (want the dog's eye view?) and produces a shopping list of materials. I think it will actually project costs, if the prices for individual items have been entered. The planning may be so much fun, you never get around to actually wielding a hammer. You won't want to miss this presentation. Steve is an enthusiastic speaker who clearly likes his job (I've heard him twice). Over and above whatever appears among the raffle items, he always has a sheet of User Group specials that represent significant savings. MacInTax and Quicken 5 at the March 14, 1995 PMUG Meeting For this month's meeting, think finance. Tod Salkovitz (who was here in February '93) from Macintosh Accounting Consultants will cover finance from A to Z. Todd is going to give a general overview of accounting and finance packages available for the Mac. Then he will show us how to set up a personal account in Quicken 5. From there we will dive right into MacInTax (we have raffle copies also). Bring any accounting questions you may have--Todd is a certified trainer for many of the top Mac accounting software packages. The PMUG DIALOG and Premiere at the February 14, 1995 PMUG Meeting I've heard many people comment on the high quality of the PMUG DIALOG. This month, DIALOG editor (and most prolific contributor) Terry Wilson will show us what it takes to put together a highly regarded publication. Paula Hulick, from Princeton University's New Media Center, will demonstrate Adobe's video editing software, Premiere. The New Media Center is a new department of the Center for Information Technology which offers consulting and production using interactive media, hypermedia, digital video, presentations, and image processing for University clients. Paula will show us how she uses Premiere in some of these projects. Making a Screen Saver, a Macworld Expo Report, and CD-ROM Games at the January 10, 1995 PMUG Meeting At this month's meeting, Lyle Andrews will show a screen saver he successfully designed and developed for the Macintosh. He will describe his experiences making it, demonstrate the product, and discuss plans for marketing it. Bill Achuff, who has completed his third trip to Mecca-on-the-Pacific for the MacWorld Expo, will report on a number of new developments, gadgets, opinions, and rumors, founded and un- from the expo. Megan Peterson, who reviewed two Japanese adventure games on CD (L-Zone and Gadget) in last month's DIALOG, will show scenes from them to exhibit the excellent graphics they contain. She will also show a CD containing the Spiegelman cartoon series called Maus. Back to Upcoming & Past Meetings |
