1996 General monthly meetings

PMUG Features a holiday party at its December 17, 1996 Meeting
Note! This is the 3rd Tuesday

The December PMUG meeting will be our traditional holiday party featuring a variety of SIG tables, disk copying, and holiday food. Come join us for a festive feast for the mind and soul.

PMUG Features Creative Web Page Design at its November 12, 1996 Meeting

The November 12th PMUG meeting will feature Megan Peterson, PMUG President, and Caryl Felicetta, PMUGDialog co-Editor, who will discuss Web design, stressing design concerns and the consequent technical aspects. Megan and Caryl bring their traditional graphic design expertise to Web design problems and will share theirexperiences with us.

PMUG Features Multimedia Creation and Map Software at its October 8, 1996 Meeting

The October meeting will feature Dan Preston, a PMUG member, of Telequest, Inc. in Princeton Junction, showing how he produces multimedia projects and the software he uses in his work. Bob Dahl of Cartesia, Inc. in Lambertville will show their line of map software (maps for various uses, not mapping).

PMUG Features "Hands-on night" for the new and intermediate Mac User at its September 10, 1996 Meeting

In September we are going to experiment with a new format designed specifically for the beginner and intermediate Mac user. We encourage everyone in that category to take advantage of this opportunity and give us feedback on its effectiveness. We also encourage the more advanced users to help out with instruction and direction.

After the usual How & Why SIG, an introduction and Q & A period, we will split up at 8:00. The main auditorium will be used to explore basic questions on the Internet and America Online. Jon Baum and Brenda Flam will be available for questions. We hope to have a live connection to the Internet.

In a side room, Ray Laue and Sheldon Presser will be ready to cover Mac Basics, as basic as you want. They will have one or two Macs ready for hands-on demonstration of answers. They may have extra hardware available to show internals and demonstrate installing a hard drive.

Graphics software questions will be supported by Megan Peterson and Caryl Felicetta. We will have software such as PageMaker, QuarkXpress, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Microsoft Word available.

Please remember that in all three areas that these are not presentations but hands-on venues to answer basic questions. No question is too simple. This time is designed for you.

PMUG Features PageMaker and Illustrator at its August 13, 1996 Meeting

More Adobe! When they stop producing great and important software and buying up others, we will stop inviting them, but til then...

Kevin McGrath, the Mid-Atlantic Regional rep, stationed in Boston, will grace us with presentations on both the latest version of PageMaker and that of Illustrator. These products, while essential for the graphics and publishing industries, have become very important for many people in other businesses or with personal uses. They both are very complicated programs requiring training and practice, so we look forward to this opportunity. Be prepared and start writing down your questions now (and don't forget about out monthly Q&A sessions if you can't wait).

Look for Adobe among hundreds of vendors at MacWorld Boston which runs from August 7 through 10 this year. Adobe is always one of the bigger exhibitors, but the company has at least twice as many products this year, so this should be very interesting.

PMUG Features Windows '95 and Broderbund at its July 9, 1996 Meeting

Heresy Night! Apparently this is what PMUG has called this "event" in the past. Alan Goldberg, one of our early presidents who still works for CIT at Princeton University, will "postview" Microsoft Windows '95. Maybe he has all the kinks worked out by now. This should be interesting, Alan is always good for a chuckle or two.

And lest you think we have totally lost it, Steve McClatchy from Broderbund will divert us with at various fun Mac products, time permitting. We've had quite a few requests for Broderbund so I expect to see a good turnout (snow permitting).

PMUG Features Adobe Acrobat at its June 11, 1996 Meeting

Yes, this is going to look as if Adobe is taking over PMUG, but the company publishes such varied products and we are lucky enough to have found several representatives available.

Paul Gerlach, New Jersey Manager for Adobe Systems, will give a presentation/explanation of Adobe Acrobat and its various uses, including its use for the World Wide Web which allows Web designers to maintain design and formatting without having to submit to the limits of HTML. Paul has visited PMUG before and we look forward to his return.

Adobe will be back in August when Kevin McGrath, educational rep from Boston, visits to show us the latest versions of PageMaker and Illustrator.

PMUG Features ClarisWorks at its May 14, 1996 Meeting

Michelle Stankowski of Claris will be demonstrating and deciphering ClarisWorks 4.0, a product which offers integration of word processing, drawing, spreadsheets, and databases. This product area was once a competitive field of which ClarisWorks has been most popular. ClarisWorks users should look at the ClarisWorks Users Group Web page as a good source of information and support. Michelle will also be available to answer questions on FileMaker Pro 3.0 as a continuation of February's meeting.

PMUG Features PageMill and the Newton MessagePad at its April 16, 1996 Meeting

Note! This is the 3rd Tuesday

Local Mac author (PeachPit Press) and popular PMUG speaker Maria Langer will show us how Adobe Systems PageMill is used to create Web pages and the process you follow to get your Web page up on the Web.

Also, PMUG member Steve Weyer will demonstrate Apple's Newton MessagePad, emphasizing new features in the recent Newton OS 2.0: built-in applications, stationery, improved print recognition, landscape orientation and other user interface features, communications, and several shareware applications he's developed such as Newt's Cape (for creating Newton books from HTML).

PMUG Features ResEdit and FileMaker Pro at its March 12, 1996 Meeting

Long-time PMUG member and more than full-time Mac guru Andy Baird will acquaint us with one of the more esoteric facets of working with the Macintosh with his talk "Who's Afraid of ResEdit?" Have you wondered how some people manage to rework the whole look of their desktop? Or have you been intrigued with ResEdit but nervous about approaching it? Well, this is the meeting for you.

Bill Achuff will demonstrate the new relational version of the database program FileMaker (3.0). The flat file FileMaker from Claris has long been one of the most popular for the Mac. It is easy to learn and use and very flexible. Bill Achuff has long been a contributer to PMUG and is a founder of the User Group Alliance based in Phildelphia which links up many user groups across the country (and outside) with vendors and eachother.

PMUG Features Adobe's FrameMaker and Computer Ergonomics at its February 13, 1996 Meeting

Hoping against a repeat blizzard performance for the February PMUG meeting, we will hear from a representative of Adobe Systems, Gregory Kovacich, who will enlighten us on Adobe's FrameMaker page layout software. In addition, Joan Manley, Director of Occupational Therapy, Princeton Medical Center, and Frances Prentice, Princeton Medical Center, will present a talk on "Ergonomics and Computer Worksite Safety".
