1998 General monthly meetings

December 15, Annual Holiday Party

As usual, we will have an open meeting and party with food, fun, socializing, and perhaps somesmall presentations.

November 10, Ideas and Tips for Small Businesses on the Internet with Bill Ringle, Director of Internet Services for StarComm

Starcomm does training and development in Drexel Hill, PA. http://www.starcomm.com or bill.ringle@starcomm.com

We have had similar presentations before on web site development, but I think you will find this one particularly valuable.

Bill did a seminar at this month's MacWorld Expo in New York with Peachpit author (and PMUG speaker) Maria Langer on how small business should approach putting together a web site. The why, what, how, etc. of a web site for a business is very different for a business than a personal site. The seminar was very well organized and covered most applicable topics. Bill will be doing a longer version for us, so begin to prepare your questions now and take advantage of his expertise.

October 13, Creator 2 from Multi-Ad Services

There are many people who would be surprised to hear that are actually alternatives to Pagemaker and QuarkXpress. About 10 years ago, while wandering around MacWorld Expo, I watched a demonstration of a new program that was designed to do one page advertisements, classified ads and those ugly bright ads that use a lot of things like starbursts. It really did have a lot of interesting features that nothing else did but of course it was missing a lot, too -- and it was very specialized.

Over the years Multi-Ad has evolved into a very sophisticated tool that is still more for advertising and newspaper classified ads, but has tremendous features that streamline work wonderfully. Look at their web site at http://www.multi-ad.com for more information and explanation.

September 8, Preventive Ergonomics with Fran Prentice (Merwick Occupational Therapist)

Get your thinking caps on and see if you can help identify a member who would make an excellent officer or board member. Or maybe you would like to get in on the excitement (including monthly pizza-catered meetings).

We have been trying to have Fran back for years now (the last time she was here we met in the Woodrow Wilson School) and we have shuffled the poor woman around with various months this year, but we have finally settled on September.

Almost none of us treat ourselves properly physically as we work day-to-day on our Macs, no matter how aware we think we are of posture, hand and eye rest periods, etc. Fran will be jogging our memories and reminding us just how serious this can be and what can be done about it.

Children & The Internet by Don Smith with Det. Robert O'Leary & Crimes Related to High Technology (with emphasis on children)

August 11, Digital Cameras with Andy Baird, PMUG member and former Dialog editor/guru

Are digital cameras ready to replace traditional film-based photography? Not in all cases, but they're starting to offer some serious competition in many areas. Convenience, instant results and very low cost of consumables are among the advantages of digital cameras such as Apple's QuickTake series.

Andy will demonstrate the basics of digital photography using his QuickTake 200, talk about choosing a camera, and cover the all-important topic of how to find the longest-lasting batteries. Andy's website at http://members.home.com/andybaird/quicktake_200_page.html has additional details.

July 14, Adobe Systems Inc. New Product Announcements and Demonstrations

One of our favorite speakers, Brent Bailey will attempt to show us all of the new programs, upgrades and new versions of existing programs that the other software monopoly, Adobe Systems, is bringing out this year. Believe me, Adobe programmers have not been sitting on their laurels, they have been extremely busy. Adobe arguably makes the best and most extensive range of state-of-the-art products in the graphics and publishing industry. They have competitors, but come and see how they are making those competitors jump this time.

June 9, Immersive Imaging with QuickTime VR

Krista DiGiacomo, VP Sales and Marketing of Kaidan, Inc. will de demonstrating how to author QTVR (QuickTime Virtual Reality) files using Kaidan products and the new QuickTime VR Authoring Studio from Apple.

Kaidan is a leading manufacturer of Immersive Imaging (QTVR, Reality Studio) hardware, including tripod heads, object rigs and turntables which allow for complete Immersive Imaging content creation. The entire Kaidan line supports any type of camera: digital, video or still. The motorization software is fully Apple Scriptable.

Kaidan also sells Apple's QuickTime VR Authoring Studio bundled with their products.

Visit their web site at http://www.kaidan.com for more information on Kaidan and to get a better handle on this technology if it is very new to you.

May 12, Microsoft Office 98 for the Mac

Microsoft representatives Ronald Bajakian & Maureen Crommie from New York will be on hand to show us the new and radically improved Microsoft suite of programs for the Mac that include Word, Excel and Powerpoint. This presentation should be a necessary one for almost every PMUG member, for who doesn't use a word processor, many use spreadsheets, and quite a few business and academics have found presentation programs invaluable.

Microsoft let Mac users down with Word 6.0 a few years ago. Come and judge for yourselves if they have really made a new commitment to the Mac platform.

April 14, Investing and Stock Trading on the Internet and The BeOS

PMUG member Albert Medwin will talk about "Stock Trading on the Internet." He will show how to obtain information -- on both stocks and mutual funds -- that is freely available at different sites on the Internet. He'll discuss fundamental and technical analysis; also getting real-time data and the mechanics of making trades. In addition, he'll describe a program he has written that automatically downloads and stores stock data, performs different analyses, and generates customized charts.

Our second speaker is Mike Russell, a 19-year old college student who began to follow Be's development nearly two years ago. After being rejected for the developer's discount because he couldn't program, Mike was forced to buy a PC instead of the BeBox he wanted. Although he doesn't use the OS himself, Mike has been very active in the BeOS community. In November 1997 he formed Fleming'BUG, a BeOS user group for Hunterdon County and the surrounding area.

March 10, NASA Astronomical Data CDs with Keith and Mark Sproul

Keith visited a few months ago with a talk on Global Positioning Systems which was far more interesting and entertaining than (quite honestly) some people expected. But those people hadn't met Keith!

Keith mentioned that he and his (twin) brother Mark have an extensive collection (I think he said over 400!) CDs of data and photos from NASA. We have been considering a talk on some of the astronomy programs available on the Mac and this seemed like an interesting segue to a later talk on such applications.

Mark's Macintosh page is at http://msproul.rutgers.edu/macintosh.

So take a chance and join us if you have any interest in astronomy and NASA's forays into the solar system or if you would just like a chance to pick the brains of such talented Mac users.

February 10, MIDI with Joel Phillips from Westminster Choir College

This month will bring Joel Phillips from Westminster Choir College in Princeton to discuss MIDI on the Macintosh. MIDI is used extensively by Joel and others at the College. Joel and a colleague visited PMUG at a December party three or four years ago.

January 13, Jason O'Grady from Odyssey Systems

Odyssey Systems is located in Manayunk, PA. Odyssey is an up and coming web design/maintenance/hosting company. In addition to a demanding schedule as one of the partners, Jason also maintains a web site he put up specifically to provide a central location for PowerBook information. He is an excellent speaker and should be equipped to answer most Internet-related questions.
