2006 General monthly meetings

December 19, 2006 - Annual Holiday Party and Silent Raffle

The annual Holiday Party and Silent Raffle will be held on the third Tuesday of the month. Two silent raffle items are the new 30GB iPod Video and 2GB iPod nano! (These particular items are for current members only, and membership will be open before the meeting.) The holiday party is the yearly fundraiser event with food and merriment, a chance to help PMUG and possibly win Apple related products.

Everyone at the meeting can donate any Apple Computer related product and buy raffle tickets. Donations are asked to be in working condition and if not won at the raffle, donors are required to bring the items home with them. The Silent Raffle is similar to a swap meet, but more organized and much fairer.

Important information:
At 6 pm raffle items should be turned over to Bill Howard in Room A-10. Food and party supplies can be given to Terry Wilson in A-6/A-8. Raffle tickets will be for sale. PMUG members receive one free ticket. Additional tickets cost $5 for 12. Non-member tickets are $5 for 6. Dinner is from 7-8 pm in Rooms A-6 & A-8. At 8 pm, the raffle opens. Each bidder places ticket(s) in cups next to the items they desire. The bidder must be present to win. No items can be held or shipped. Bill Howard picks one ticket from each cup and awards the winner their prize. Everyone has a chance to win and can submit more than one ticket for any item.

May 9, 2006 - Power-up Excel with Joel May

Excel is much more than rows and columns, formulas and lookups. It is capable of many tricks that most of us don't use and are even unaware of. In this presentation, Joel May will explore with us some of these underused features such as advanced charting, date arithmetic, filtering, pivot tables, scenarios and functions.

Joel has spent most of his adult life teaching, first at the Graduate School of Business of the University of Chicago and, subsequently, at the School of Public Health of the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey with a stint in between as President of the Health Research and Educational Trust of New Jersey, a subsidiary of the New Jersey Hospital Association.

He holds a BS degree in Economics from Albright College and an MBA and PhD in Economics and Statistics from the University of Chicago. He's been using computers since 1961, the Internet since 1974, PCs since 1979, and the World Wide Web since 1994.

Since his retirement in 1995, he has volunteered his time teaching computer skills to senior citizens at the Ewing SeniorNet Computer Literacy Center, reading for the blind at the NJ Library for the Blind and Handicapped and singing in Princeton Pro Musica and the Hopewell Valley Community Chorus.

April 11, 2006 - Personal Mass Media: Blogs, Photo Blogs, RSS, Podcasts, and Vidcasts with Douglas Dixon and Sol Libes

Photo of Doug DixonNew Internet technologies are changing how people communicate. Mainstream mass media is challenged by personal media, as the old model of one-way broadcasting has been usurped by distributed conversations.

Doug Dixon provides an introduction to Podcasting (radio shows on your media player or computer), Blogs (online journals), Vlogs (Video Blogs), and RSS (Web subscription services). He will discuss how these new services are used, how you can tap in to these growing conversations, and how you to get started communicating too.

Sol Libes also will demonstrate using iTunes for Podcasting and Videocasting, showing examples of how to search, and subscribe to syndicated content.

Douglas Dixon is an independent technology consultant, author, and speaker specializing in digital media. Previously a product developer at Intel Corp. and Sarnoff Corp., he is the author of four books and has published over 200 feature articles. Doug is currently editor-in-chief of IRMA's Mediaware magazine and East Coast technical editor for Camcorder & Computer Video magazine, and also contributes to the U.S.1 Newspaper in Princeton. Doug has organized and presented over eighty seminars and talks on digital media topics over the past six years, for professional groups and at conferences including CES, NAB, Government Video Expo, and DV Expo. He makes his articles and technical references freely available on his Manifest Technology website.
